Tips for creating a clear and concise interior design brief

  • The purpose of a design brief is to clearly communicate to an Interior Designer, Architect or a Builder information on your lifestyle, likes and dislikes, preferred style and the vision your wanting to achieve.
  • Include details of your family, how often you entertain, what your family does for recreation and relaxation.
  • Your “must have items” should be listed room by room and ranked in order of importance.
  • Include photos of design ideas that illustrate your preferred look and feel

Introduction

  • describe your lifestyle (sports, hobbies, entertaining);  how you like to entertain and how often, do you ever have visitors staying with you
  • do you have any significant equipment (camping equipment, trailer, boat, cars, caravan etc.)?
  • describe your property.  Include the age of the property, how long you have owned your property, how long you plan to stay and the “big picture” of what you would like to create.
  • Style of your existing house
  • Describe your preferred new design, and any design features you would like to include.
  • What is your preferred construction? (i.e. concrete slab, timber floor, brick veneer, solid brick etc.)

Interior spaces

  • Number and type of living areas
  • Dining area, casual, formal, seating capacity
  • Describe your kitchen style and specific features?
  • Walk in and butlers pantry required or pantry cupboards? How do you want to use them
  • Size of laundry and specific requirements?
  • Games room, rumpus room, media room, home theatre?
  • Study, home office, library?
  • Mud room, store room, workshop, wine cellar?
  • Number of bedrooms and sizes?
  • Number of bathrooms and specific features?
  • Master bedroom requirements and design features?
  • Guest bedroom requirements?
  • Type of stairs, voids?
  • Preferred ceiling heights?
  • Any specific electrical system requirements?
  • Any heating or cooling requirements?​
